June in Ireland: Embrace the Rain (and Everything That Goes With It)

June in Ireland: Embrace the Rain (and Everything That Goes With It)

Let's be honest. When most people imagine June, they picture blue skies, sunscreen and sitting outside in a t-shirt until 9pm. And sometimes - just sometimes  - Ireland delivers exactly that. A golden evening, the smell of cut grass, everyone suddenly appearing in their gardens like they've been released from captivity.

But most of June? It's grey. It's fresh. It rains on a Saturday afternoon just when you had plans. And you know what  - that's fine. Because Ireland in June has its own magic, and once you stop fighting the weather and start leaning into it, the whole month gets a lot better.

The Irish Summer Nobody Talks About

There's a particular kind of Irish summer day that doesn't get enough credit. It's around 15 degrees. There's a soft drizzle on and off. The sky is that deep grey-green colour that only exists here. And yet  - people are still outside. The fire pit is lit. Someone's firing up the sauna. The smell of woodsmoke is drifting over the fence.

This is the Irish summer nobody puts on a postcard, but nearly everyone actually loves. It's cosy without being cold. Active without being exhausting. And there's something about that particular combination  - cool air, warm fire, good company  - that you just don't get on a beach holiday.

What to Actually Do on a Rainy June Day in Ireland

1. Fire up the outdoor sauna

If you have a wood-fired sauna  - or have been thinking about getting one  - June is genuinely one of the best months to use it. The air is cool enough that the contrast between the heat inside and stepping out feels incredible. You're not sweating before you even get in the door. And the longer evenings mean you can go from sauna to cold shower to sitting outside with a drink well past 9pm, still with daylight.

Kiln dried birch is the classic choice for sauna  - it burns hot, clean and fast, which is exactly what you want when you're heating a small enclosed space. It lights easily, reaches temperature quickly and doesn't fill the room with smoke.

2. Get the fire pit going

A fire pit on a grey June evening is one of life's underrated pleasures. There's something almost primal about it  - the smell, the crackle, the way everyone naturally gathers around it. Conversations get slower and better. Phones go away. Kids are entertained for hours just poking at it with a stick.

For fire pits, hardwood logs are the way to go. They burn longer and more consistently than softwood, which means you're not constantly feeding it. Birch and oak both work brilliantly  - birch for a bright, lively flame, oak for a slower, longer burn that lasts well into the evening.

3. Cook pizza in the outdoor oven

Wood-fired pizza on a rainy June day is one of those things that sounds a bit mad and turns out to be brilliant. The oven keeps you warm while you're cooking, the kids are involved, and the end result is genuinely better than anything you'd order in.

For pizza ovens you want smaller, shorter logs that burn hot and fast. Birch is ideal  - it reaches high temperatures quickly and burns cleanly, which is important when you're cooking food. Avoid anything damp or unseasoned, which will smoulder and affect the flavour.

4. Cosy evening indoors with a real fire

Sometimes the best thing to do with a rainy day is lean into it completely. Get the fire going early, cook something slow, and spend the evening actually together  - board games, a film, proper conversation without the distraction of needing to be somewhere.

A real fire in the living room changes the entire atmosphere of a house. It's warmer than central heating in a way that's hard to explain  - it feels different. More present. And the sound of it, the light from it  - there's nothing quite like it on a grey Irish evening.

Oak is the classic choice here  - it burns long and steady, holds heat well and throws a good amount of warmth into the room. Exactly what you want for a long, slow evening in.

5. Make the most of the grand stretch

Even on a grey day, June evenings in Ireland are long. It stays bright until 10pm or later, which means you've got a huge window after dinner to be outside, even if the day itself was miserable. Light the firepit at 8pm, sit outside until it's dark  - which might be 10:30  - and you've had a genuinely great evening that cost almost nothing.

Why June Is the Best Month to Stock Up on Firewood

Here's something most people don't think about until October - firewood. By the time the first cold snap hits, everyone in Ireland suddenly wants it delivered yesterday. Stock runs low, prices go up, and you end up paying more for less.

June is the smart month to order. Demand is low, stock is good, and at OneStopFuel our prices right now are the lowest they'll be for the foreseeable future. From July our prices are going up - so ordering in June is genuinely the best value you'll get all year.

All our firewood is kiln dried, Ready to Burn certified and EPA registered. It's delivered straight to your door, anywhere in Ireland, free of charge. Whether you need bags for the sauna or the firepit, or a full crate to see you through the winter - June is the time to sort it.
